Providing information on grant schemes

VAL Sector Support gave information to the Canal & River Trust on devising a small grants scheme

Canal & River Trust is a charity who look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of waterways working with volunteers and communities across England and Wales to transform canals and rivers into spaces where people want to spend time and feel better.

The Canal & River Trust contacted VAL to arrange a meeting with several of their staff, both local and regional, to present and discuss some of the key things that they should consider when developing a small grant scheme.

VAL met with them to discuss the key things to take in to consideration when devising a new grant scheme. Firstly, the amount of money the fund has to disseminate and secondly, the size of the grant and the impact this will have on the grant process itself.

For instance, a small pot of money and a smaller grant award requires a more streamlined application process, with emphasis on due diligence and a vigorous panel procedure. During the meeting VAL shared experiences and advice based on previous successfully delivered schemes and provided information on the lessons that they had learnt.
