Volunteer Stories – Carolyn’s Story

As part of Volunteers Week 2021, we are sharing some of the stories of our staff, who volunteer outside of VAL.

Volunteers’ Week – It’s a chance to say thank you for the contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK and a great way to recognise and thank all our volunteers, for all the amazing things they’re doing to help us make a difference.

Carolyn Newman – Development and Volunteering Advisor, VAL

During the last year outside of my day job as a Development and Volunteering Advisor at VAL, I have continued to be a trustee on the H A Taylor Trust in Syston which I have been involved with for the last 17 years. We usually meet every 6 weeks to make decisions on grant applications received to the Fund. The remit of the charity is to make grants to assist people who are in need, hardship and distress and who live in the Parish of Syston. Grants are made to both individuals and organisations.

I have done several volunteering roles over the years, this is the one I find the most rewarding as the decisions we make at the meetings make a real difference to people’s lives and change them for the better I feel not only myself but all the trustees involved are making a difference in the community where we live and on a personal note it’s a nice feeling of putting something back to the village now a town where I have lived for 39 years.

Although the trustees have been unable to meet face to face to make decisions, we have continued to hold regular meetings on zoom which benefit individuals.

Leicester Charity link administer the trust for us and they will be advertising on our behalf to recruit new trustees so, if you live in Syston and interested in making a difference in the community visit the VAL Volunteering website to apply https://valonline.org.uk/start-volunteering/
