Catherine Higgs has been an active volunteer for many years, beginning with her local school’s PTA and expanding into charity fundraising for causes close to her heart, including Women’s Aid Leicestershire Limited (WALL). Inspired by her mother’s example of community involvement, Catherine continued to look for meaningful ways to give back when her daughter moved on to secondary school.
Through VAL, Catherine discovered a wide range of volunteering opportunities that allowed her to build confidence, develop new skills, and connect with like‑minded people. Her work has included everything from organising fundraising events to delivering STEM workshops across Leicester as a STEM Ambassador—an experience she describes as both empowering and deeply rewarding.
Catherine is now a trustee for WALL, a role she found through VAL and one that has given her the chance to contribute directly to vital local services. Some of her most memorable moments include supporting residents at the charity’s Christmas party and cheering on runners fundraising for WALL at the Leicester 10k.
Looking ahead, Catherine hopes to continue her work with WALL and her STEM outreach, driven by a passion for helping others and making a positive impact in her community. Her message to others is simple: if you have the chance to volunteer—take it. The difference you make, no matter how small, truly matters.
