Mark’s Journey of Confidence and Community at Charnwood Eco Hub

Since February, Mark has been a dedicated Thursday volunteer at Charnwood Eco Hub—and the experience has become a transformative chapter in his personal journey. After three challenging years away from work, volunteering at the Hub has given Mark both a renewed sense of purpose and the opportunity to build new skills in a supportive environment.

Building Skills and Confidence

Before joining the Hub, Mark had never worked on a till. Now, he proudly recalls selling his first-ever items—an achievement that has significantly boosted his confidence. Each shift gives him hands-on experience and a safe space to learn, grow, and reconnect with the rhythm of working life.

A Place Built on Trust and Community Values

Charnwood Eco Hub is run by people Mark “trusts implicitly,” and that trust has been a cornerstone of his positive experience. The Hub is dedicated to reducing landfill waste through upcycling, borrowing, sharing, and teaching new skills. It’s a welcoming space where environmental impact and community connection go hand in hand.

What Happens at the Hub

Volunteers and visitors alike enjoy a range of creative and practical activities:

  • Library of Things: Hire tools for a small fee—an accessible way to borrow rather than buy.
  • Scrapstore: Fill a basket of craft materials for just £5, from catering crackers to seasonal décor.
  • General Shop: Browse items including charcoal briquettes (£2.50), topsoil, and craft kits.
  • Workshops: Saturday sessions sometimes feature special activities like paper‑flower making.

Charnwood Eco Hub is located in the old Towles building on the corner of Nottingham Road and Clarance Street, above the SOFA furniture charity. Opening hours are Thursdays 10–1 and Saturdays 10–2.

A Personal Transformation

For Mark, the Hub has become more than just a place to volunteer. It’s a community that has helped him rediscover his confidence, develop new skills, and take meaningful steps toward future opportunities.

“Volunteering at Charnwood Hub has given me the chance to build new skills, experience, and confidence in myself.” — Mark
