Volunteering – Joey’s Story

Read how Joey found employment as a receptionist with her experience gained from volunteering with us.

Joey enquired about volunteering via the volunteering website and applied for the role of a Customer Service & Administrative Support Assistant with Shopmobility.

Leicester shopmobility is a scheme that offers anyone with a mobility problem through illness, injury or age the free loan of a scooter, power chair and manual assisted wheelchair.

They were looking for volunteers to deliver customer service and administration, supporting people with the free loan of a mobility equipment while shopping. The role involved greeting visitors, answering the telephone and dealing with equipment bookings.

“I’m glad I chose to apply and volunteer at Shopmobility. I’ve managed to refine my customer service skills, gain experience as a receptionist, and learn administration skills, as well as also engaging with other volunteers and service users. Because of my time volunteering, I’ve secured a role as a Receptionist and I’m thankful that Nadeem gave me a chance. It was rewarding to help the community and service users with their needs whilst having the opportunity to develop my own skills.

The process of registering my interest in volunteering through VAL was simple, quick and easy. It’s a shame I hadn’t heard of VAL before or I would’ve been interested in volunteering during my time in education as well.”

I am happy with my volunteering role, and I would recommend it to anyone!”
