Leicester City Council are leading a Severe Mental Illness and Social Isolation task and finish group which aims to address health inequalities across the city. Group members include representatives from Voluntary Action Leicester, Healthwatch, Public Health, Adult Social Care and Leicestershire Partnership trust.

The purpose of the group is to improve social inclusion for people living with severe mental illness. The definition we are using of severe mental illness is: people with psychological problems that are often so debilitating that their ability to engage in functional and occupational activities is severely impaired, Schizophrenia, psychosis and bipolar disorder fall into this category.

One of the areas that would like to explore is how VCSE organisations include people with SMI in their day to day activities and events, i.e. what works well, what challenges have been experienced and what if any, reservations exist. It would be much appreciated if you could share your insight with us. Any information will help to structure a webinar planned for the 28th October which aims to dispel myths and empower VCSE organisations to work with people with serious mental illness with confidence.
