Mental Health Support Teams in Schools Steering Group is looking for new VCS sector representatives.

The VCS network has already shown a strong commitment to improving mental health support for children and young people, and we know there is significant expertise and reach within local communities that can add real value to this programme. As we move forward with the ambition of achieving 100% MHST coverage by 2029/30, closer partnership working between MHSTs and VCS organisations will be vital.

We would like to invite expressions of interest from the VCS network for two people representing the city and the county to join the MHST Steering Group. The role will involve:

  • Providing a VCS perspective on children and young people’s needs.
  • Helping to strengthen links between MHSTs and community-based services.
  • Supporting the group’s focus on improving access, equity and outcomes.

 What are MHSTs?

Mental Health Support Teams in Schools (MHST) are part of a national programme to reduce inequalities and increase access to mental health support for children and young people.  It is a programme that is being rolled out in phases as part of a nationally led expansion.

The LPT service works with almost 100 schools across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The teams offer support to children and young people who are experiencing:

  • low mood, worry, anxiety and avoidance (eg simple phobias or separation anxiety), sleep difficulties.
  • The team can provide techniques and strategies to children and young people, either on a direct 1:1 basis, or within school groups. MHST also work closely with parents/carers to help them understand and support their child’s mental health.

The team work collaboratively with the school’s mental health lead and senior leadership team to raise awareness and promote better mental health for everyone as part of the school’s ‘Whole School and College Approach‘.

What is the MHST Steering Group?

It is a meeting that comprises staff from the local authorities, education, and health

How much time will I have to give?
The group meets every two months for 90 mins. You will not usually be asked to present or prepare anything outside of this meeting, just be present, represent your view and the views of the sector and facilitate / enable joint working with the VCSE.  There are papers that are sent out before the meeting, so it would be helpful if you have time to read these.
