New campaign aims to root out labour abuse in the Leicester clothing industry

Anti-slavery charity Unseen is launching a new campaign to raise awareness and reporting of labour abuse among clothing workers in the Leicester area.

The campaign is urging people to get in touch with Unseen’s Modern Slavery & Exploitation Helpline if they:

  • Think they are the victims of labour abuse
  • Or they know someone who is being exploited.

Individuals can phone the 24-hour Helpline on 08000 121 700 for advice on what to do.

All calls are free, confidential and can be conducted in more than 200 languages.

The campaign is being backed by a number of local businesses, Leicester City Council and the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, which works to protect vulnerable and exploited workers.

The campaign film can be viewed on Vimeo, once logged in.

Further written details about the campaign can be viewed here,

Basic details of the Helpline service can be accessed in seven different languages here.

Local VCSE organisations may want to inform their beneficiaries of the service and also consider when appropriate to refer someone to the service. In addition local VCSE organisations may want to review their safeguarding procedures to take account of this new service.

In 2017 the Charity Commission published safeguarding and protecting people for charities and trustees guidance which might aid any review undertaken.
