Decent Homes Standard review

On 8 February 2021 the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government published the Decent Homes Standard: review guidance.

Back in November 2020 the Social Housing White Paper was published and inside that paper a review of the Decent Homes Standard was announced.

VAL previously wrote about the social housing white paper and details of that article can be found here.

The Decent Homes Standard is a technical standard for public housing introduced by the government. Emphasizing that the housing must be in a reasonable state of repair. It must have reasonably modern facilities and services. it must provide a reasonable degree of thermal comfort.

The review of the standard will be conducted in two parts.

Part 1 will run from Spring to Autumn 2021 and will seek to understand the case for change to criteria within the Decent Homes Standard.

Interested stakeholders including individual social housing residents and landlords, academics and those holding a commercial interest in the review can register to receive papers and to submit comments and evidence in writing.

Details of the existing decent home guidance, published in 2006 can be found here.

Further details of the review and how to submit comments can be found here.

Local VCSE organisations that own housing stock or support communities in public housing may wish to submit comments.
