Guidance for the period of national mourning

Following the announcement by Buckingham Palace of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the cabinet office published on 10 April 2021 guidance for the Period of National Mourning.

The purpose of the document is to provide the public, industry and businesses with information and key links regarding national mourning.

The period of National Mourning began on Friday 9 April 2021 and will continue until the end of Saturday 17 April 2021. This means that Union flags are being flown at half-mast on Royal Residences, Government Buildings, establishments of the Armed Forces and UK Posts overseas.

On 10 April 2021 the  Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and Cabinet Office published a news story stating to mark the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh on 9 April 2021, there will be a national one minute silence at 15:00 on Saturday 17 April 2021. To pay  respects to His Royal Highness this silence will be observed in all UK government buildings. Local authorities, other bodies and individuals may choose to observe this silence.
