In celebration of Volunteers Day, we’ve invited some of our dedicated volunteers to share their personal experiences and insights about volunteering.
We hope that by hearing from them, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the impact volunteering has, not just on the community, but on the volunteers themselves.
Graham – Volunteer at One Roof Leicester
I chose to volunteer with this organisation because I am keen to support vulnerable people. Homelessness is a complex issue that affects many in our community. This organisation is known for making a real difference by providing immediate relief, such as food and shelter, and offering long-term support like job training, mental health resources, and advocacy. I wanted to be part of an organisation that works holistically to address the root causes of homelessness and empowers individuals to rebuild their lives.
Volunteering has helped him to develop a variety of skills, from practical ones like using IT and resources available to vulnerable people, to personal ones like active listening and empathy.
I’ve learned a lot about the challenges homeless individuals face and how systemic issues like affordable housing, mental health, and addiction contribute to homelessness. Even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life. Personally, volunteering has given me a deep sense of purpose and helped me grow as a more aware and engaged member of my community.
Volunteering has made me more aware of struggles that often go unnoticed. It has opened my eyes to the complexity of homelessness and the importance of addressing both immediate needs and underlying causes. It has made me feel that I’m actively contributing to positive change. On a broader scale, the organisation’s work has helped create a safer, more supportive environment for those facing homelessness, and I’m proud to be part of that effort.
To anyone considering volunteering for the first time, “Go for it!” Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding, and it doesn’t have to be a huge commitment to make a real difference. Start small, find an organisation that resonates with you, and get involved in whatever way you can. Volunteering not only helps others, but it can also be an eye-opening experience that teaches you a lot about yourself and your community.
Whether you’re looking to develop new skills, meet new people, or simply make a positive impact, it’s a great way to grow and give back.
