This report explained that the findings highlight the burden that has fallen on Chairs and trustees of charities, many of whom do not have any staff to call upon for support.
The report calls for:
- Chairs to prioritise their own well-being and seek out support from colleagues and other Chairs and support organisations such as AoC.
- Board members to be more proactive in finding ways to support the Chair by taking on additional tasks and working to enhance relationships within the board and beyond.
- Chief Executives and charity staff to signpost Chairs to sources of support and, where appropriate, create a budget for development or to access support.
- Funders, including government, to increase their commitment to supporting governance costs and support for these key volunteers.
