Volunteer Stories – Jane’s Story

As part of Volunteers Week 2021, we are sharing some of our volunteer stories.

Volunteers’ Week – It’s a chance to say thank you for the contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK and a great way to recognise and thank all our volunteers, for all the amazing things they’re doing to help us make a difference.

Jane applied for a role of Guest Welcome Volunteer with the organisation Foxton Locks via the VAL Volunteering website. Here is her story of her journey into volunteering:

I was invited on site to have a conversation about the volunteering opportunity. The role was explained to me in detail and I had the opportunity to ask any questions. I was impressed by the friendliness and enthusiasm of the 2 people who interviewed me, one being the site manager.

The role sounded perfect especially as there were a range of possibilities and the opportunity to have input into the development of the role which is a new one. Communication with me throughout the process has been prompt and friendly and an effort has been made to keep in touch throughout the lockdown period.

As I have been unable to start properly before lockdown I was invited to do a wide range of online training courses- many of these were useful. I have also taken part in 3 online meetings- new volunteers in the East Midlands, all volunteers in the East Midlands and one for the new volunteers at Foxton Locks for the guest volunteer role.

All training aspects were covered, from relevant health and safety to how to claim travel expenses. I felt that the role had really been thought through and the importance of it emphasised. I have been very happy with every aspect of this process and am looking forward to starting on site.
